Chelsea will struggle against Steaua

Chelsea travel to Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League needing a win after a disappointing opening to the Champions League campaign. The Blues were beaten at home by Swiss giants Basel in the last round of matches.

Jose Mourinho's men will face one of their toughest games this season in Bucharest, with the Romanian champions maintaining an unbeaten home record in the Champions League dating back to 2008.

Chelsea fans will remember the last time they faced Steaua - losing to Steaua last season in the Europa League, when a Raul Petrescu penalty gave the home side a 1-0 win.

Steaua have an intimidating home record in all competitions - they are without a loss at home since June this year. They've also got a 100% record in the Romanian top flight at home this season - conceding just one goal in five games.

Despite the hostile atmosphere and tough playing conditions, Mourinho will expect his team to gain all three points on Tuesday. Chelsea have a patchy away record with just one win in six of their last away games - as well as losing their last two away in the Champions League.

Mourinho was adamant that failure to qualify for the next stage would be unacceptable for Chelsea:

"For my personal pride, I would not like to play in the Europa League with Chelsea," Mourinho said.

"The Europa League is a prestigious competition, but you need to be manager of a Europa League team to be in it.

"Anyway, I don't understand why the team that is third in the Champions League [groups] should be in the Europa League. If you finish third, you should go home.

"Teams that play in the Europa League suddenly have opponents from a different level appearing in their competition. This I don't understand. You finish third, you go home. I would be disappointed to play in the Europa League, so we have to get the win in Steaua Bucharest."

He was also aware that having lost their last home game, Chelsea's away fixtures are key to progression in the Champions League:

"It means we cannot lose this game and normally we have to win it. A draw is not enough.

"If we go there and do not win, we are depending on the results of our opponents in the group. We don't want that, but I know what pressure is. At Inter, I went into the third game of the group knowing we had to win at Dynamo Kiev or we were out. We got the win. I know what pressure is.

"The difficulty is when you lose the first game of the Champions League at home, it reduces the chance to have a second mistake. So we have to try and get the three points."

Mourinho has confirmed that Juan Mata will start against Steaua after a good performance against Tottenham at the weekend. Kevin De Bruyne has been frozen out of the Chelsea squad, and will likely be shipped out in January after being asked to train with the Under-21s.
