Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain was a target for Arsenal during the transfer window, reports Sky Sports.

The Argentine international will line up against his summer suitors when the Serie 'A' outfit travel to England for Tuesday's Champions League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

And, the Gunners boss needs no reminding about the threat the former Real Madrid hit-man possesses, having tracked him closely during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"We were working on two or three targets and he was one of them," Wenger told Arsenal's official website. "It didn't come off in the end, that doesn't take anything away from his quality.

"Napoli took advantage of that at the right moment, it's more about timing as well.

"In the end Real Madrid sold two great players, one of them went to Napoli, one [Mesut Ozil] went to Arsenal so it's 1-1 on that front."

Arsenal were beaten to Higuain's signature by Napoli, after Rafa Benitez shelled out £32million to bring the South American striker to Italy.

It's a move that looks like paying off, with the 25-year-old having already scored four goals in seven appearances for his new club, the latest of which coming in the 2-1 win over AC Milan on September 22.

Higuain seems to be settling in well in Naples, and insists he has no regrets over his decision to snub interest from Arsenal in favour of a move to Stadio San Paolo.

"I am very happy that I have joined Napoli," he said. "We have started well in the league in Italy and have got off to a good start in Europe too.

"I know there was other interest from England and Italy, but I am very sure that I made the right choice by joining Napoli and have no regrets. It is a club where I can achieve everything I want."
