Ever since the departure of club legend Didier Drogba, Chelsea have struggled to fill the void left by the talismanic Ivorian.
Seemingly world class acquisitions in the past (Shevchenko/Torres) have struggled to make a mark in the blue of Chelsea and none have made the number nine role their own.
The collective millions spent on the two examples greatly outweigh the price tags of some of the Premier League's hottest looking talents. Two of which are Chelsea players past and present.
Daniel Sturridge is amongst the Premier League's top goal scorers so far this season and his exciting brand of football is an attractive prospect to any club.
Gone are the days when tunnel-vision plagued his game, his approach to football is more well rounded and matured; something that comes with age, and something Chelsea weren't willing to wait for.
The offloading of Romelu Lukaku to Everton in favour of Samuel Eto'o is another prime example. Having spent last season on loan at West Brom, racking up 17 goals in the top flight (more than any other Chelsea player managed), it would seem to the fans and the footballing world that the young Belgian was ready for the big time.
His impressive maiden season followed by an encouraging pre-season almost certified that he would lead the line for the Blues this time round. However, on the final day of the transfer window, he was once again shipped out.
The acquisition of Willian which is what seemingly led to the Eto'o deal is one that most saw as an irrelevant purchase.
With the likes of De Bruyne, Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle and Moses occupying those areas it seemed a buy not worth the coin and one which could have been spent to reinforce other areas.
Any smart man would not question the motive's of Jose Mourinho, but one must speculate at whether, having returned to Stamford Bridge, he is assuming full control of the clubs transfers, or whether de ja vu is rearing its ugly head.
