Nico Hulkenberg is "too heavy" for the 2014 McLaren as speculation around the future of Sergio Perez continues.
Hulkenberg is one of the tallest drivers on the grid and it has emerged his feet are a tight squeeze into his current Sauber car. With the German seemingly out of the Swiss team for next season, numerous options have been talked about, with one possible destination being McLaren.
But at 74kg Hulkenberg's weight could play against him.
For 2014 the new power-trains with a turbo and the ERS is set to add a lot of weight to the cars and the minimum weight has been increased as a result.
However the amount is less than most had expected, putting bigger drivers like Hulkenberg at a disadvantage.
Another man who has had this issue is Mark Webber, the Australian is also around 6 feet tall and weighs 72kg, he admitted: "(I) haven't eaten for the last 5 years! Minimum weight has been too low for ages.
"Perfect driver weight now 60-65kg."
The reason for the McLaren interest appears to be because of issues between McLaren and the sponsors of current driver Sergio Perez.
The Mexican replaced Lewis Hamilton for 2013 but speculation is that Perez's backers are behind in payments to the Woking based team.
Further fuel was added to the fire after it emerged that razor company Gillette is the favourite to replace Vodafone as title sponsor at McLaren rather than one of Perez's Mexican sponsors.
If Hulkenberg does not get in at McLaren the 24-year-old appears to have two more options.
He is linked with the seat at Lotus- though he faces competition from the newly backed Felipe Massa- and former employer Force India also could be interested in his services.
Competition for the seat currently held by Paul di Resta could come ironically from Kevin Magnussen, a product of McLaren's young driver academy.
Respected journalist Michael Schmidt claims the Dane could be the front runner as Force India owes McLaren money for the supply of transmissions and hydraulics.
