Chelsea have confirmed that Fernando Torres is set to miss up three weeks of action with a knee injury.

The 29-year-old limped off during the Blues 4-0 dismantling of Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League last night, and had scans to determine the extent of the problem.

Despite initially being confident that it was only a minor knock, it now appears that he could miss nearly a month's worth of football after being assessed by the Chelsea doctors.

The news broke on the club's official website, where a statement read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm Fernando Torres suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee in the Champions League group game at Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday evening.

"The 29-year-old will be out for approximately three weeks."

The news will undoubtedly come with massive disappointment for the Spanish striker, who has recently enjoyed a run in Jose Mourinho's starting eleven.

The former Liverpool man will have been looking to make a statement to the fans and his manager in last night's fixture, after being sent off against Tottenham at the weekend, instead he only lasted 11 minutes.

Chelsea sit second in their Champions League group, three points behind Schalke after their shock opening game defeat at home to Basel.
