Ryan Giggs has now made more appearances in the Champions League than any other player in history.

The Welsh winger, who has enjoyed a career with Manchester United which has spanned an incredible 23 years, appeared as a substitute during Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The 39-year-old came on for Marouane Fellaini to record his 145th appearance in the Champions League, taking him past the record he shared with Real Madrid legend Raul, and straight into the history books.

Giggs was a pivotal component of the successful years United enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson over the past two decades, and this most recent accolade, which solidifies him ahead of not only Raul but also the likes of Paulo Maldini, Xavi and Clarence Seedorf in terms of appearances in Europe's most prestigious club competition, is the latest in a long list of achievements.

The United star has lifted the trophy two times and scored a number of vital goals in the tournament.
