It’s been eight painful years for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger - their prolonged trophy drought stretches all the way back to 2005 when Patrick Vieira last lifted the FA cup.
Ever since then the Gunners have been mainly outspoken by the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and more recently Manchester City. But after a promising start to the new season, could the Gunners finally claim some long-awaited silverware to their recently bare cabinet?
Nine games into the new campaign, Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League and a tough Champions League group, following victories over Marseille and Napoli.
In the past Wenger may have been open to selling his star players, with the likes of Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri all moving on without being replaced.
However this season, the signing of Mesut Ozil for £42.5 million from Real Madrid made a huge statement that the Gunners are serious about their trophy chances this year.
Their chances in the league have no doubt been strengthened by the managerial changes at Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City - however it’s been their own performances which have really put them in the frame.
Players like Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey have made vast improvements from last season. Ramsey in particular has made a huge difference, his goals and inspirational role in midfield has been a revelation to the side.
Although Wenger’s eight years without a trophy have been sweetened by consistently qualifying for the Champions League the Frenchman will know silverware is the main judging criteria when you’re at a club as big as Arsenal.
Their new campaign has certainly shown a lot more promise than the previous few but we’ll gradually see if their strong start to the season can be sustained, or whether another year without a trophy will pass them by.
