Chelsea should sign Defoe in January

Chelsea should try and sign Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window.

The Spurs striker is the type of player that the Blues don’t currently have at their disposal – a poacher who simply loves to shoot.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe that Defoe is a better player than Romelu Lukaku, and in my opinion the Blues should have kept the Belgian this season. But, they didn’t, and with Roberto Martinez claiming that there isn’t a recall clause in the deal, the Blues need to do something about their problems in attack.

Fernando Torres looked back to his old-self against Tottenham Hotspur before his red card last weekend, but he still didn’t manage to score.

Demba Ba appears out of favour under Jose Mourinho, who admitted he would have sent the player out on loan had it not been Arsenal pursuing his signature.

And then there’s Samuel Eto’o. It’s easy to see why Mourinho made a move for the Cameroonian, having got the best out of the 32-year-old during one particularly impressive season at Inter Milan.

However, he’s been out of football’s sharp end for a few seasons, scoring 36 goals in two-and-a-bit seasons for Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia. His role at Stamford Bridge is expected to be from the bench.

Defoe has also been spending plenty of time on the bench at White Hart Lane, but he offers something different and has a consistent goals record when either starting or coming off the bench.

He’s not set the world on fire, with his return of 24 goals in all competitions in the 2009/10 season a relatively modest best in comparison to the world’s elite. He notched 17 goals two seasons ago, 16 last season and has six already this term.

That does show a level of consistency that appears to be lacking in west London, and whilst Defoe won’t particularly set the pulses racing, he would be a shrewd addition for ‘the Special One’.

At 30-years-old, the England international isn't one for the long-term future, solving the short-term problem rather than helping to build a dynasty.

Whilst fans want success for years to come, they also want to compete in the here and now, and the arrival of Defoe would make Chelsea stronger than they are without him.
