Manchester United have joined local rivals Manchester City in the race to sign St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma in January, according to the Daily Mail.

The 18-year-old is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Ligue 1 at the moment, and continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League when the transfer window reopens.

Manuel Pellegrini is understood to have identified the France U21 international for a possible move to the Etihad Stadium, and sent Manchester City's top scout Gary Wirthington to watch Zouma in action last week.

However, the Citizens will now face competition for the player's signature, after Red Devils boss David Moyes considers a rival bid to lure Zouma to Old Trafford at the turn of the year.

Manchester City are ready to offer St Etienne £7million, and Manchester United will have to match that offer if they are serious about securing his services.
