Manchester United are not the only club looking to sign Leighton Baines it has emerged, Tottenham Hotspur are also looking to tie up a January deal, according to the Sunday People.
The Everton man became focus of intense transfer speculation over the summer when his former manager at the Toffee's, David Moyes, took over from the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
United made their interest very public and launched a bid for both Baines and teammate Marouane Fellaini.
After a frantic final few days in the transfer window Moyes managed to bring in Fellaini but couldn't strike a deal for the left-back who remained at Goodison Park.
It was expected that the 28-year-old would get his dream move in January after stalling on a new contract on Merseyside.
However big spending Spurs are ready to hijack any deal.
The north London club spent heavily in summer, breaking their transfer record three times, backed with the money from a world-record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid but they remain light in Baines position.
So far the duties have been shared by Danny Rose who is now injured along with Kyle Naughton and Jan Vertonghen who aren't natural left-backs.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas will likely see the former Wigan Athletic defender as a potential key part of his side as they chase Champions League football and more ambitiously the Premier League title.
The White Hart Lane outfit could move top of the table today if they comfortably beat West Ham United and Arsenal fail to win at West Bromwich Albion.
Meanwhile United are struggling in ninth position.
