Manchester United players have let Moyes down - Rooney

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has called on his teammates to "pull together" for under-pressure manager David Moyes.

The 27-year-old, speaking after United's 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday evening, believes it's the players who are responsible for the club's poor start to the campaign - and not Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

“Obviously the manager is under a bit of pressure,” Rooney told reporters. “We know as a team it’s us who have let him down. We have to pull together for the manager and show the sort of fight we have done here and we’ll be fine."

United, last season's Premier League champions, secured their third win of the campaign at the weekend to move up to ninth place in the table.

But Rooney accepts that the Red Devils' early-season form has been below-par.

“It will be because it’s a new manager with different styles and we have to adapt to them," the England international added. “We need to do better for him than we have been.”

United now have a two-week break before their next Premier League fixture, against Southampton, while Rooney prepares to play in England's crucial 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland.
