Arsenal are reportedly considering an audacious £25 million January swoop for Lazio midfielder Hernanes, according to LazioNews24.

The 28-year-old playmaker, who joined the Serie A outfit from Sao Paulo in August 2010, has impressed fans and pundits alike in Italy and his eye-catching performances have seen him persistently linked with a switch away from Stadio Olimpico.

Premier League leaders Arsenal were repeatedly rumoured to be interested in acquiring the Brazilian international's signature during the summer, with fierce North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly keen after seeing compatriot Willian opt for a move across the capital to Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Following the successful impact of German star Mesut Ozil since his £42.5 million transfer to the Emirates Stadium from La Liga giants Real Madrid on deadline day, long-serving Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could well be keen to further move on from his previously frugal stance on spending.

According to reports in Italy that were picked up by talkSPORT, Arsenal are continuing to monitor Hernanes ahead of a possible mammoth January bid.

With a glut of midfield options at his disposal however - including England international Jack Wilshere and in-form Welshman Aaron Ramsey - it remains to be seen if Wenger, who has been charge at Arsenal since succeeding Bruce Rioch in 1996, will seek to prioritise other areas of his squad when the marker re-opens for business.
