San Jose Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart has received a three game suspension following his check on Rick Nash.
The game finished 9-2 to the Sharks but the result was marred by an injury to Nash following a clash with Stuart in the first quarter.
The hit, which occurred during Tuesday night's game between the San Jose Sharks and the New York Rangers, caught Nash on the head and forced him to leave the game in the second period.
Stuart, who was making his first appearance of the season, received a minor penalty for the infringement during the game.
Upon review, the check shows Stuart's shoulder catching the jaw of Nash and the NHL has decided that, although looking like the defenseman did a lot right, the upward movement that caused the danger.
The seeminlgy harsh penalty is a sign that the league is prepared to come down harder on dangerous tackles.
Along with a three game suspension Stuart has also been fined $55,384.62.
