Cristiano Ronaldo escapes red for kung-fu kick

Cristiano Ronaldo was fortunate not to escape a red card in Portugal's World Cup qualifier with Israel on Friday after lashing out kung-fu style.

Ricardo Costa gave the home side the lead just before the half hour mark, but an already frustrating evening for the Portuguese was compounded when Eden Ben Besat struck an equaliser with only five minutes remaining, all but ending Portugal's hopes of automatic qualification for Brazil 2014.

Cristiano Ronaldo eventually let his frustrations get the better of him on a night where nothing he and his teammates did could bag the second goal that would have kept them in the hunt.

The Real Madrid star was lucky not to be sent off for his actions - Israel midfielder Eran Zahavi was tussling with Cristiano Ronaldo to try and win the ball and somehow managed to miss a swinging boot.

Ronaldo had lashed out with a kung-fu style high kick after letting his anger get the better of him, but did not make contact with his opponent - it was also right in front of the referee, so he was even more fortunate the official didn't dismiss him.

The match ended 1-1 and it meant Portugal are now three points behind Group F leaders Russia with a significantly inferior goal difference - Fabio Capello's side would have to lose their next match against Azerbaijan and Portugal would have to beat Luxembourg in their next match by at least seven goals to guarantee automatic qualification.
