Walsall rescued a point from Saturday's game at Colchester this afternoon after Andy Taylor equalised with 60 seconds to go.
The Saddlers started the game brightly with efforts from James Baxendale and Craig Westcarr, but it was the home side who were heading for victory after Colchester forward Freddie Sears scored just seven minutes into the game. Walsall had plenty of chances to go ahead but were unable to convert any shots. They piled the pressure on but failed equalise.
Walsall maintained 55% of the possession with 18 shots on goal and seven on target. But after a free-kick was given to The Saddlers in the 96th minute, they managed to equalise after a fantastic volley from defender Taylor - his first goal of the campaign.
Walsall manager Dean Smith had previously said after the 2-0 defeat to Bradford that he would try to ensure shots were converted better as the Saddlers fight for qualification for the play-offs, but could Smith need to look into the transfer window in January for a star striker? It would benefit the club, but, as Smith works on a small budget, he may have to look at loan options or free agents.
The Saddlers would benefit from a striker, but with the Chairman unwilling to invest in his team, Smith wouldn't have many options to improve his squad. It is possible that with the football Walsall have been playing, adding into the equation a new forward would almost guarantee a play-off position.
Could Jeff Bonser be tempted? Should 'Deano' look at selling unused players to fund a move? Or can Walsall defy the odds and qualify without any changes? Most Walsall fans believe that Bonser needs to go, but who knows what it would take for this to happen as it's obvious that fan's voices are going unheard and the club is getting neglected.
