Glen Johnson is stepping up his recovery from an ankle injury and could feature against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, according to the Daily Mirror.

The England international has been out since early September after the injury forced him off during the 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Anfield.

Liverpool initially estimated the 29-year-old right-back could be on the sidelines for up to 10 weeks, but he's ahead of schedule and returned to training with the first-team squad this week.

And the report claims Johnson, who started training today, could be in contention to face Alan Pardew's side at St James' Park at the weekend.

In his absence, Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has opted to change his formation rather than play Martin Kelly or Andre Wisdom for any length of time.

Following the double acquisition of Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho on transfer deadline day, Rodgers has shuffled his pack to find a way to incorporate his centre-backs.

The Northern Irishman has played three at the back recently, playing Sakho alongside Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger.
