Xabi Alonso to make MLS transfer

Liverpool look set to miss out on an emotional reunion with Xabi Alonso, after it was claimed the Spaniard will join either LA Galaxy or New York Red Bulls when he leaves Real Madrid.

The future of Alonso has been the subject of intense speculation of late and, according to Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada - who was speaking on Punto Pelota - a move to the MLS beckons for the 31-year-old.

It has been suggested that Alonso will sign a two-year deal with either the Galaxy or the Red Bulls, and will reject any interest from the Premier League, Serie A or Ligue 1.

Alonso has not played a single match under new Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti due to injury, but the club's summer acquisition of prominent midfielders has raised question marks about his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Liverpool had emerged as a potential destination for Alonso, with claims that Reds manager Brendan Rodgers had been given the go-ahead to pursue a move for the player during the January transfer window.

It would appear, however, that Liverpool will be unable to recapture the signature of Alonso, who left Merseyside for Madrid in the summer of 2009.

Alonso was a firm favourite with Kopites during his five years at Anfield, and scored 19 goals in 210 appearances for Liverpool.
