Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Ashley Cole and international hat-trick hero Andre Schurrle will miss the club's clash with Cardiff City this weekend.
Cole missed England's two final World Cup qualifiers, while Andre Schurrle dazzled in his country's 5-3 win over Sweden.
Leighton Baines deputised for Cole, who injured his ribs against Norwich.
And Mourinho said the experienced left-back remains in pain.
"Ashley is not selected," Mourinho is quoted as saying on Goal.com. "I don't know [when he will return] - it depends on the pain.
"It's not dangerous but it's very painful. At this moment the pain persists and he can't train.
"If he can train on Monday and be a choice for Champions League - I have my doubts."
Whilst Cole was injured before the international break, Schurrle has returned from the Germany squad with his injury.
The Chelsea boss pointed that the situation can be very common in a World Cup year with players pushing themselves to impress for their national side:
"It's a kind of problem that happens a lot in World Cup years," said Mourinho.
"A player with a little problem wants to play for his country and returns to the club.
"He has a little problem in a [leg] muscle and we can not risk. It's no problem because he was in very good form.
Former Real Madrid manager Mourinho believes the German's injury will give an opportunity to someone else to fight for a first-team place.
"“We have other players and options. It’s not a problem. It’s a position where we have good enough problems. It’s a chance for someone else.”
Mourninho is boosted, however, by the return to fitness of record-signing Fernando Torres.
The Spaniard was injured in Chelsea's 4-0 win over Steaua Bucharest, but has recovered.
“He’s ready. The medical department are good and the player is very good. Good dedication. He’s back," Mourinho said.
“We have the three [strikers] available. I want to have problems by having players to choose.
“I don’t want an easy selection. I want a difficult selection. [Fernando] Torres, [Samuel] Eto’o and Demba [Ba] are all ready.
“He could start. I was doing tactical work but I was not wanting to show the player who is going to play. They don’t know who is going to play.”
Chelsea will be looking to win their clash at home with Cardiff, with a win enough to send the Blues top should results go their way.
