Fernando Torres will fire, says Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has praised Fernando Torres' hunger to rediscover his best form and is convinced the £50million striker will fire this season.

Torres has failed to reach anything close to his Liverpool peak since the British record transfer in 2011 but has shown flashes of it so far this season, not least in his last appearance against Tottenham Hotspur.

Torres was eventually red carded in that game, though was fortunate not to go sooner for a scratch on Jan Vertonghen, and picked up an injury that has kept him sidelined until this weekend but put in possibly his most encouraging performance for a long time.

Mourinho also felt as though the showing at Spurs was positive and insisted the Spain international had done well this season and was confident Torres would be getting among the goals after making an impressive recovery.

“I think Fernando is doing well this season. He didn’t score in the Premier League, but some matches he wasn’t even on the bench as I left him out," the Blues boss is quoted as saying in The Times.

"He played very well against Bayern Munich [in the Uefa Super Cup] and he’s playing OK. He was very proactive against Tottenham, very dynamic, the best people had seen for quite a long time.

“The fact he recovered so well from his injury is not about the medical department, but his feeling. He had the same feeling playing that game against Tottenham as you did watching it. He wants to be back.

“He knows important matches are coming. He’ll come back good, and hopefully there’ll be one or two goals. He will score. Normally strikers have to score goals, and he will.”

It has been a trying time this season as he has seen the arrival of Samuel Eto'o provide him with further competition for the centre-forward position, but his manager is obviously convinced 'El Nino' will respond positively.
