Any slim hopes that Manchester United or City had of luring Andres Iniesta away from the Nou Camp have been dashed, as it was revealed that he is being offered a contract that will make him one of the highest paid players in Europe.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Barcelona chiefs are desperate to keep the Spanish maestro at the club and will do everything in their power to ensure that there is no shock departure.

The 29-year-old has previously declared that he wants to finish his career with the Catalan club, but that hasn't been enough to stop the likes of United and City sniffing around, particularly when it emerged that there had been difficulties in negotiations regarding a new deal.

However reports are now suggesting that an agreement has virtually been reached in principle, with Iniesta set to receive a lucrative salary increase to match his iconic form. Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu affirmed these rumours.

"This will not be the last renewal with Iniesta/ Barcelona and [he] will sign up to the year that the law allows," Bartomeu said.

"Negotiations are ongoing and two parties want to reach agreement. Iniesta will have one of the best wages, because he is the best in Europe."
