Manchester United manager David Moyes has publicly backed Red Devils left-back Patrice Evra.

The 32-year-old has been embroiled in a row with Bixente Lizarazu after the former Bayern Munich and France star launched a scathing attack on Evra.

Evra called Lizarazu and several other media pundits 'tramps', after the group criticised the Manchester United defender for giving his teammates a half-time team talk during France's World Cup qualifying match against Belarus.

Didier Deschamps' France were losing 1-0 at the time, but went on to win the game 4-2 after Evra's motivational speech.

Red Devils boss Moyes has since jumped to the defence of his left-back - by labelling Evra a 'key figure' in Manchester United's dressing room.

"I don't know how you see Patrice in France but in Manchester we have a very high opinion of him," Moyes told L'Equipe ahead of his side's Champions League showdown against Real Sociedad.

"He has been a great figure in the dressing room since I have been at the club."

Despite receiving high praise from Moyes, Evra's long-term future at Manchester United remains unclear as the Frenchman recently revealed 'personal' reasons are stopping him from signing a new contract at Old Trafford.

Evra's current deal expires at the end of the season.
