Jermain Defoe has warned his Tottenham team-mates that they cannot afford to underestimate the threat posed by Hull ahead of their Premier League clash on Sunday.

The striker fired Spurs to their third straight Europa League victory of the season against Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova last night, equalling Martin Chivers’ club record for goals on the continent in the process.

With their progress to the next round of the competition all but assured, Spurs now switch their attention to keeping up with the pace at the top of the table when they host Steve Bruce’s Hull side at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

A familiar face will be standing in their way as Tom Huddlestone returns to north London for the first time since his summer switch to the KC Stadium.

Spurs stumbled to defeat against West Ham in the days after their Europa League victory against Anzhi Makhachkala earlier this month, and Defoe says they can’t afford to slip up once more.

“It is important we keep winning football matches,” he said. “I am looking forward to both games. We’re a club that is going places.”

He added of the return of Huddlestone: “We’re all looking forward to seeing him. He was a great player here and is doing well for Hull, pulling strings and stuff.

“It is going to be a tough game but it is a game we have to win.”

Defoe’s deflected strike against Sheriff ensured Spurs came away from a tough tie against Sheriff with all three points after Jan Vertonghen had opened the scoring.

Speaking about equalling Chivers’ record of 22 European goals for Tottenham, the 31-year-old said: “It is special because he is a legend at the club, someone I look up to and respect. To be up there is great.

“One more goal I will be on the top on my own, and to have someone around you like Martin Chivers is special.”
