Major League Soccer franchise Toronto FC are keen to sign England duo Frank Lampard and Jermain Defoe, according to reports in Canada.

The Canadian outfit, coached by former Spurs and Queens Park Rangers centre-back Ryan Nelsen, finished 10th in the Eastern Conference last season and are currently ninth following Saturday's hard-fought 1-0 win over rivals Montreal Impact at BMO field.

However, it would appear as if CEO Tim Leiweke and new general manager Tim Bezbatchenko have much grander plans for the future of Toronto.

The Toronto Sun claims that Leiweke recently informed fans that the Reds have been approved going forward to spend a hefty fee believed to be in the region of approximately $26 million and the newspaper believes that Spurs star Jermain Defoe is at the top of their shortlist of transfer targets.

31-year-old Defoe, who is currently in his second stint at White Hart Lane, remains an integral member Andre Villas-Boas' first-team squad in North London but has found regular starts hard to come by in the Premier League so far this season.

In addition, the Toronto Sun also goes on to state its belief that Chelsea stalwart Lampard is also wanted by Toronto and the franchise would be willing to make considerable waves by potentially making him the highest-paid player in the league following the climax of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

At 35, Lampard is approaching the twilight years of his career - normally the stage at which such reputable players embark upon spells in the MLS - but is evidently still of immense value to Blues boss Jose Mourinho, with the popular Portuguese consistently including the England centurion in his starting XI.

Leiweke, formerly of the Los Angeles Galaxy, was involved in the deal which saw global superstar David Beckham move to the MLS back in 2007.
