Real Madrid contemplated a swoop for Radamel Falcao as they pondered whether to press ahead with their swoop for Gareth Bale, according to reports.

Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles also claims that while Madrid decided what to do, Manchester United attempted to sign the Welsh forward.

Bale left Tottenham for a world record £86 million fee to head to Real Madrid on deadline day, and has since struggled to settle at his new club.

The move dragged on throughout the summer transfer window before finally being completed, and since then reports have emerged that Manchester United tried to hijack the deal.

It's claimed that Manchester United offered Tottenham £100 million for Bale - more than was on the table from Real Madrid - but the north London club preferred to sell abroad while Bale had his heart set on the Bernabeu.

Writing on his Sulia page, Castles claims that not only did Manchester United try to sign Bale in the summer, but that they are also monitoring developments in Spain ahead of a potential €100 million swoop next summer.

In a new twist to the summer saga, Castles adds that as the Bale deal dragged on, Real Madrid contemplated spending upwards of €90 million on Falcao despite the fact he had only signed for Monaco two months earlier.

Madrid's move for the Colombian fell down when Monaco refused to sell their marquee signing of the summer, which put the Spanish giants back on to Bale.

Bale has struggled with injury since moving to Spain, and has only made four La Liga performances.

He started in El Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday but struggled to make an impact, before he was eventually substituted on the hour mark.
