Chelsea wasting Juan Mata, says Mendieta

Gaizka Mendieta says Juan Mata is being wasted under Jose Mourinho, who continues to use him from the bench.

The Spanish playmaker has won the club's personal player of the season award both times since moving from Valencia in 2011 but has found himself out of favour since the return of Mourinho.

So far the 25-year-old has started just four of Chelsea's nine Premier League games with Mourinho preferring to use Brazilian star Oscar in the central No.10 role.

Mendieta, who played for Spain during his career, says he is surprised by the situation Mata finds himself in and insists his talents are going to waste at Stamford Bridge.

He told talkSPORT: “The Mata situation is quite surprising.

“With his performances and the style of football he plays, you would have thought Mourinho would play him more. He has Oscar and Hazard in the same position though.

"It’s a waste for himself, the national team and his club to have a player of his ability on the bench.”

Mata will likely get an opportunity to impress tonight in the Capital One Cup tie against Arsenal.

Mourinho has admitted that he will be forced to rotate his squad following his side's 2-1 defeat of Manchester City on Sunday afternoon and Mata will reportedly start alongside other squad players like Demba Ba.
