Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has backed up his managers calls for patience at White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas sensationally criticised the home fans, claiming his side felt like the away team because of the atmosphere.

Speaking to Sky Sports the Portuguese said:  "We didn't have the support that we should have had in a game that we needed a win."

And Townsend appeared to reiterate Villas-Boas' statements, urging fans to remain patient throughout the game.

“It was difficult against a team that sets up with five defenders and four midfielders, all behind the ball,” Townsend is quoted as saying in the Evening Standard.

“We tried to play the football, the opposition wouldn’t let us with their system and tactics, but our persistence paid off and we got the win, that’s all that matters.”

Tottenham struggled to create clear-cut chances and Townsend insisted fans stick behind the team, even if it takes them until late-on to get a goal.

“It’s difficult and sometimes it will take 70, 80 minutes to get the goal. Thankfully, we got the goal we deserved because we were the only team going for it.” he said.

Tottenham have started the season well after their summer splurge, but goals have been difficult to come by for the North London club.

Although Spurs currently occupy a top-four spot, they have scored an incredible 11 less goals than rivals Arsenal three points ahead.

And some Tottenham fans have been critical of the sides' performances at home this season.

After their hard-fought victory over Hull on Sunday, they face the same opponents at White Hart Lane tomorrow in the Capital One Cup.
