As Moyes agrees to the possibility of sending Wilfred Zaha out on loan, I can’t help but see the similarities between this situation and Chelsea’s situation with Romelu Lukaku.
A young player, brought in by a former manager and possessing bags of potential, but unable to make it in to the first team because of a hierarchy of players that inevitably cost more and have more experience.
Sometimes that experience is a great thing, but other times it’s a burden. When you’re not expected to take a game by the scruff of the neck and bend it to your will sometimes you can, just ask Andros Townsend.
So perhaps it’s a bad decision to send Zaha out on loan, maybe Moyes should take a gamble and play him on the opposite wing to young Adnan Januzaj. But maybe not.
At the moment Manchester United have an extremely vast squad of players, and they’re not all going to get playing time.
When Shinji Kagawa isn’t getting playing time (a player who commanded the Bundesliga for two or three years), is it fair to give an untested 18-year-old a starting position?
Well, no. Thank God it’s not my decision because I can’t manage a football team.
Perhaps going out on loan would be good for Zaha and United.
There’s no doubt it will be good for him, the playing time and the fitness would be welcomed by any player in the Premier League who’s missing out at the moment; but maybe United will benefit too as instead of seeking a permanent move elsewhere he’ll come back raring to go, and a much more ‘polished’ player to boot.
If Everton are really lucky, Martinez would do another wonderful bit of business, and bring in the young Englishman, then perhaps we’ll have another manager (‘not’) regretting their decision to let a young player, who should be in the first team, plying his trade at the Toffees. I don’t know many Evertonians who would be opposed to that.
Either way the one thing that Lukaku’s Everton experience has taught all of us is that a return clause in a loan contract is a must. Otherwise another team will benefit from your (sooner than you thought) star player, and all you can do is watch and wait until they return too late.
