Manchester United starlet earns Rooney comparison

Manchester United youngster Nick Powell is similar to Wayne Rooney, according to Wigan Athletic boss Owen Coyle.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan with the Latics and has impressed at the DW Stadium, scoring four goals in his first 11 appearances for the Championship outfit.

He signed for Manchester United in July 2012 in a deal worth a reported £6m after helping Crewe Alexandra seal promotion to League One via the play-offs, and scored on his Premier League debut against, coincidentally, Wigan.

And after spending a couple of months with the Latics, Powell has convinced Coyle that he possesses as much football intelligence as Manchester United star Rooney.

“Nick is a natural footballer and is very much like a Wayne Rooney,” Coyle was quoted as saying by the Express.

“I know United have a position where they think Wayne is best but in my eyes he can play anywhere such is his football intelligence on the pitch. Nick Powell is like that.”

England Under-21 international Powell is one of several United youngsters who have impressed on loan spells this season, but the technically-gifted midfielder has arguably been the pick of the bunch, helping the FA Cup holders in both the Championship and Europa League.
