Arsenal are weighing up a move for West Ham defender Winston Reid, reports the Metro.

The New Zealand international has had a terrific 18 months and was awarded West Ham's Player of the Season last term.

He has continued that form this season and has helped the Hammers to one of the best defensive records in the league, conceding just eight goals - less than leaders Arsenal.

And it is Arsenal who are reportedly keeping tabs on the defender with Arsene Wenger keen to add options at the back.

Skipper Thomas Vermaelen has had quite the opposite last 18 months compared to Reid, losing his place in Arsenal's starting side after a string of poor performances.

The Arsenal captain hinted he may have to consider his future at the Emirates if he can't break in to the team and Wenger may move for Reid to avoid being left short should Vermaelen leave.

Arsenal's chief scout Steve Rowley has given his blessing for Wenger to make a £6m bid in January after being impressed by the 25-year-old.

The Metro are also reporting that both Manchester United and Liverpool remain keen on the player but it is believed Reid would prefer to remain in London.

David Moyes is thought to be on the lookout for new defenders in January as he looks to strengthen a weakening back four.

Both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are well in to their 30s and 6'3" Reid could be part of a reshuffle at the back at Old Trafford.
