Liverpool transfer advantage dismissed for £12m United target

Liverpool have not gained an advantage in the race for Manchester United starlet target Will Hughes.

That’s the resounding verdict of Derby County chief executive Sam Rush, who has dismissed claims that Andre Wisdom’s loan to the club will be followed by Hughes’ switch to Anfield in January.

The young Liverpool defender has joined the Rams on a season-long loan, but that doesn’t affect the highly-rated England youth international’s situation at Pride Park.

"I think the Andre Wisdom deal was very much as a result of Liverpool's desire for him to come to Derby and further his football education," said Rush, according to Sky Sports.

"Andre was the top of Steve McClaren's list of people he wanted to bring in to strengthen the squad. So no, there is no connection with Will Hughes at all.

"There has been no further movement in terms of Will. From our point of view, we are just looking forward to watching him continue to play for Derby County."

Rush also dismissed claims that he’d placed a £15million price-tag on the player’s head, although reports earlier in the day had claimed that interested Premier League parties would have to pay £12million for the player.

Those include Manchester United, who are no strangers to bringing top young players from the Football League to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils spent big to secure the signing of Wilfried Zaha in January, whilst Sir Alex Ferguson also brought Nick Powell to the club in the summer of 2012.

Whether David Moyes follows the lead of the man he replaced at Manchester United remains to be seen, but the champions won't be able to land Hughes easily with such interest in the player.

Liverpool are just one of the other clubs keen on the player, but if Brendan Rodgers was hoping that Wisdom's move from Anfield to the Midlands would give his side an edge, he will now have to think again.
