Mikel Arteta has revealed his disappointment that Arsenal failed to land transfer target Luis Suarez in the summer.

Arsenal launched several bids in an attempt to bring the Uruguayan to the Emirates, peaking at the infamous £40m plus £1 bid that inspired Liverpool owner John W Henry to publish a sarcastic tweet.

Despite reports linking Arsenal with an improved bid they did not return for the Liverpool striker and instead opted to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, much to the delight of the Gunners faithful.

Suarez has since continued his fine goal scoring form that inspired Arsene Wenger to make the bid and Arteta believes it is a shame that he is not wearing the red of Arsenal instead.

Arteta, a former neighbour of Suarez, also claimed that those who know him are aware of what a top guy he really is.

Suarez has been criticised for cheating, biting and racism during his time at Liverpool and Arteta insists he is a good person.

"People don’t know the real Luis," Arteta told The Sun. "He’s a really good lad.

"I know Suarez really well. He used to live in the next house to me and, whenever I’ve met him, he’s always been really nice.

"It’s a pity Arsenal could not get Suarez."

Arsenal host Liverpool on Saturday afternoon in a table-topping clash. On the back of two straight home defeats, Arsenal are under pressure to perform and Arteta thinks Suarez's flourishing partnership with Daniel Sturridge is a bid threat.

"Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are the two most in-form strikers in the league and will be a big threat to us," he said. "But we have the quality to beat them."
