This week FIFA announced the candidates for the Ballon d’Or award. The list includes some of the most well known football players in the world.

Gareth Bale, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Neymar, Eden Hazard, Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic are some of the names put forward.

With a first glance at this list you think that Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi will win the award. Some others may choose Gareth Bale or Neymar ( I truly wonder why? their biggest accomplishment so far is their media exposure and their transfers) or maybe Arjen Robben and Iniesta.

Both Messi and Ronaldo had a messed up season last year so, in my opinion, they cannot claim the award. I already expressed my opinion for Bale and Neymar so now I have to think about Iniesta and Robben.

The Spaniard surely is a top class player and surely plays a very important role in both Barcelona's and Spain's starting XI but last season was not a good one for him. Iniesta spent a lot of time at the physiotherapists of the club not being able to help his team and when he did play he was obviously out of form.

What about Robben though? Robben had a great season; he managed to get a grip of himself and present better than he had done for some time. But we must bear in mind that Robben started to play to his standards after January.

He needed some time to recover from the failure and disappointment of the previous season. So who was the player that carried Bayern though the time that Robben wanted to recover? Franck Ribery.

Especially during the first months of last season he was playing for both himself and Robben, but even when Robben recovered and stood up to the challenge Ribery did not stop. He continued playing at his best and led his team to an extraordinary tremble.

He won the German Bundesliga, the German Cup and the UEFA Champions League. At the start of this season we also won the European Super Cup. So it is easily understood that we are talking about a player that during last season won all the titles he could and finally we was announced Best Player in Europe by UEFA. Zinedine Zidane has said for Ribery: “he is the jewel of French football”.

To sum up during last season had the best season of his life both in performance and titles. The great Zidane openly appreciates him and he proved that n failure can stand in his way. As Ribery said: “I am thirty years old, I believe it is my time, it’s now or never”. So his time is now. He should be the fair winner of Ballon d’ Or award.
