Arsenal look good, but signing Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid can make them great.
The Gunners took another massive step to being considered serious title contenders by outclassing Liverpool to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday night.
But Tuesday night, where they were outclassed by Chelsea in the Capital One Cup, served a timely reminder that the squad isn't quite strong enough to sustain their current form.
Mainly, Nicklas Bendter - Arsenal's second string striker - looked completely out of his depth, incapable of contributing anything to the team.
Scarily, if Giroud gets injured Bendtner will become first choice.
Soon Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott will return from injury but, although both a significant improvement on Bendtner, neither should be leading the line for a title challenging squad.
They have an excellent midfield containing world-class star Mesut Ozil as well as the Premier League's in-form player Aaron Ramsey.
The defence may need reinforcing but the quality is there already. Up front signifies the only area Arsenal a clearly lacking in both numbers and quality.
So signing a top class striker can turn this team from fragile to frightening. In Diego Costa, they can have just what they need.
Arsenal have been linked with a bid for the Atletico Madrid striker with £30m thought to be enough to convince the La Liga outfit to part ways.
As Arsene Wenger showed in the summer with the signing of Ozil, Arsenal have the funds to launch such a bid.
With 12 goals in 11 appearances in the league, Costa has already surpassed his tally for last season and looks every bit like being the next South American star.
The Gunners failed to land Luis Suarez in the summer but Costa is showing the ability to match - possibly surpass - the Uruguayan.
Displaying similar levels of technique and pace, Costa also shadows Suarez with his tactics and has been criticised in the past for his on-field antics. So he is every bit the player Arsenal could have had in Suarez only cheaper.
Arsenal are in desperate need on some competition for Giroud.
Although impressive against a back three against Liverpool, the Frenchman looked exhausted after 60 minutes and could use a break.
With the international break coming up, he may get some respite but he must demand some back-up in the new year or Arsenal risk losing their best chance to win a league in a decade.
In Diego Costa, Arsenal add quantity and quality where it is much needed. He could turn Arsenal in to contenders for not only the Premier League this season but the Champions League in the future.
