Manchester United scouts made a personal check on Sporting Lisbon starlet William Carvalho in Saturday's Primeira Liga clash against Maritimo, reports Sport Witness.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, representatives from the Premier League champions ran the rule over the 21-year-old for the second time in the space of a week, as they continue to ramp up interest in the midfielder.

Red Devils boss David Moyes is understood to be keen to bring Carvalho to Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens in January, after receiving favourable reports on the Portugal U21 international.

Manchester United will face stiff competition for the player's signature though, given that scouts from Serie 'A' giants Juventus were also present for Sporting's 3-2 victory at the weekend.

Carvalho is currently one of the lowest earners at Estádio José Alvalade, but the Portuguese giants plan to offer him improved terms at the end of the season, in a bid to ward off interest from a growing list of admirers.

Until a new deal is agreed, the defensive midfielder has a €45million buyout clause that Manchester United or Juventus can activate, but given Sporting Lisbon's precarious financial situation, both clubs will hope to negotiate for considerably less.
