Quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel has urged his designer Adrian Newey to not consider leaving the team for a career in competitive yacht racing.
Last week in Abu Dhabi Newey suggested he was considering a change in career with a chance to design an America’s Cup yacht a particular ambition, indeed he met with Olympic sailing legend Sir Ben Ainslie at Yas Marina.
“I can’t imagine him doing that,” Vettel told Austria’s Servus TV.
“I’ve never seen him go boating — he loves driving and has a lot of fun doing it,” the German smiled.
“If he goes boating, he will always come back with a huge sunburn, which is not right,” Vettel joked.
While his comments may have made in a light hearted way there is no denying Newey plays a major role in Vettel and Red Bull’s success, so losing him would be a massive blow.
“Maybe someday,” Newey answered when asked if the America’s Cup is in his plans, “but not in the near future.”
The 54-year-old did however believe the new regulations coming in 2014 had the ability to shake up the grid once again much like it did in 2009, however Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko remains confident.
“We have Adrian Newey!” he exclaimed.
“Whenever there is a change of rules,” added Marko, “his cars are unbeatable.”
Indeed this is true, Red Bull were a midfield running team before the major aerodynamic changes in 2009 which thrust them and the now Mercedes team up the grid and while Ferrari and McLaren returned to the top in that first year it was nearly two-thirds through the season before they caught up.
