Lionel Messi executes stunning backheel finish

Lionel Messi was cruelly denied a truly spectacular goal last night as Barcelona cruised to a 3-1 victory in their Champions League encounter against AC Milan at the Camp Nou.

Although the Argentine sensation did net a brace as Gerardo Martino's men extended their lead at the summit of Group H, the offside flag robbed him of what would have undoubtedly been one of the goals of the season so far.

As Messi ran into the box, the ball was expertly played through Massimiliano Allegri's ailing defence and the 26-year-old Ballon d'Or favourite delightfully flicked out a boot and sumptuously backheeled it over the head of the despairing form of Christian Abbiati.

Last night was Messi's 500th professional appearance in football and he marked it with his 379th and 380th goals of what has been an unbelievable career to date.

Was it simply lucky or a breathtaking piece of skill? We will leave you to decide...
