The 17-year-old impressed on trial with United last summer, and reports have claimed an Old Trafford move remains his first choice.

He's thought to be in Europe on a month-long vacation and visited the Vicente Calderon earlier this week - but he addressed the interest from United on his Twitter account after his was asked by a United fan.

Gomes was asked: "you signing/signed for @mufc yet or not?" to which Gomes replied "I don't know ahahahaah".

Sir Alex Ferguson was thought to be a big fan of the teenage forward after he spent a brief spell training with the Old Trafford club.

And David Moyes is believed to be just as keen to sign him up, although a number of European teams - the latest being Atletico Madrid - could scupper United's hopes.

The 17-year-old has also been linked with Real Madrid, Udinese and Sao Paolo within the last month.
