Jose Mourinho has told Ashley Cole that he must fight for his place in order to get back into Chelsea's team.
Cole has been left out the Blues' last two fixtures, with Cesar Azpilicueta replacing him in the left-back position at Stamford Bridge.
And after Azpilicueta impressed in Chelsea's games with Schalke and West Brom, Mourinho has told Cole he must work hard to regain his starting spot.
And, after the Blues' 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge this past weekend, Mourinho told reporters: "I decided for Azpilicueta to play against Schalke and he was fantastic. On Saturday, he was very good again.
"Ashley is a top professional, he is a fighter. He has to work hard, to fight hard because the place [in the side] is his place.
And with Azpilicueta playing out of position in Cole's absence - as he's primarily a right-back - Mourinho has revealed the left-back position is still there for Cole if he works hard for it.
Mourinho continued by saying: "Of course, it is not Azpilicueta's best position and it is not a position where Ashley can think that he is in trouble now. No, he has to just work, fight and the position is there waiting for him, no problem."
Cole will now meet up with the England squad as he looks set to go head-to-head with Everton left-back Leighton Baines for a starting spot in Roy Hodgson's side.
The Three Lions will take on Chile and Germany at Wembley.
