Arsenal may face an intriguing battle for the signing of defender Fabian Schar, with reports suggesting that Bundesliga title hopefuls Borussia Dortmund are targeting a move for the Swiss international.

21-year-old Schar currently plies his trade in the Swiss Super League with defending champions FC Basel, a club with whom he has quickly developed into arguably one of European football's most promising defensive talents.

Such impressive form has seen him linked with a possible move away from St. Jakob-Park, with Premier League leaders Arsenal having been heavily linked with a switch for the centre-back in recent months.

Arsene Wenger is thought to be in the market for extra defensive cover when the transfer window re-opens for business, with the futures of Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna both in considerable doubt.

However, the Gunners could be beaten to Schar, with reports claiming that Jurgen Klopp's widely-admired outfit are eyeing a move for the highly-rated defender, who could reportedly be available for as little as £5 million.

According to talkSPORT, Die Schwarzgelben are very eager to recruit a new centre-back in the new year after Nevan Subotic - reportedly a target for David Moyes' Manchester United - suffered a devastating knee injury at the weekend which is set to keep him on the sidelines for at least six months.

Although they are likely to have identified more than one target, it appears as if Schar is at the very top of the list.
