Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been ruled out of England’s friendly match against Germany due to a groin injury he picked up against Chile – reports the Metro.
The 21-year-old played 57 minutes against Chile in the Three Lions’ 2-0 defeat, before being replaced by his Manchester United teammate Chris Smalling.
Former Blackburn Rovers star Jones, who has impressed for the Red Devils in both defence and midfield this season, has now returned to Manchester due to the injury he sustained at Wembley on Friday night.
“Phil Jones has been ruled out of England’s final match of 2013 against Germany on Tuesday evening,” said a spokesperson from the Football Association.
“The Manchester United defender picked up his injury during England’s defeat to Chile on Friday evening, and following a scan today [Saturday] he has returned to his club.”
His injury will be a major blow to Manchester United boss David Moyes’ upcoming plans - as Jones has been deputising in midfield for Michael Carrick, who is out for six weeks with an Achilles injury.
Manchester United’s medical team will now assess Jones to see if he will be fit enough to return to action next Saturday, when the Premier League champions travel to Wales to take on Cardiff City.
