Chelsea star Andre Schurrle has taken to Twitter to refute comments attributed to him about Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney.

Speaking ahead of Germany's international friendly against England on Tuesday, Schurrle is quoted as saying he doubted Rooney had the quality to get into Joachim Low's side.

The Chelsea man said: "Rooney is a great player, but we have good quality, too, in every position, and maybe twice, so I don’t know if he would play."

That prompted a deluge of stories under headlines suggesting Schurrle, who joined Chelsea over the summer, feels that the Manchester United forward lacks the quality to make it into the Germany team.

Now the 23-year-old has taken to Twitter to clarify his remarks, and said he didn't mean to cast doubt over the Manchester United man's quality.

He wrote: "That's not what I meant to say about Rooney!!!! He is a great player!!!!"

Regardless of the Chelsea forward's intentions, his comments are likely to add a little bit of spice to England's encounter against Germany which looks as though it may turn out to be something of damp squib.

A host of first-team regulars have pulled out of the game, while Germany are said to taking less than 1,000 fans to Wembley. Manchester United pair Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick will miss the game, while it was confirmed today that Arsenal star Mesut Ozil won't be taking part either.

England stumbled to a 2-0 defeat against Chile at Wembley on Friday evening.
