Chelsea are considering a move for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke in the January transfer window if their bid for Radamel Falcao fails, according to reports in Portugal.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims that the 22-year-old Spurs and Manchester United target is the latest name to be linked with the Stamford Bridge club as Chelsea search for striker reinforcements.

The €30m frontman only signed a Villa contract extension over the summer, but the 22-year-old is still on Chelsea's radar.

They're not the only Premier League team tracking the Belgian international, with Spurs and Manchester United also keeping tabs. Lazio and Juventus are also mentioned.

Jose Mourinho's first-choice remains Monaco forward Radamel Falcao, but the Colombian may prove too difficult to sign.

In that case, the report claims Chelsea will consider a move for Benteke. The Belgium international took the Premier League by storm in his debut campaign last season, and was linked with United, Chelsea and Spurs after less than 12 months in England.

His fine performances saw Villa reward him with a new four-year contract extension this summer, but only after Benteke was forced to withdraw his transfer request, although that has done little to dampen speculation.

The promise of Champions League football - on offer at United and Chelsea - and the potential to play at Spurs could rekindle Benteke's desire to move on.
