Chelsea are ‘monitoring’ striker Karim Benzema’s situation at Real Madrid amidst repeated interest from Arsenal, according to reports.

The Daily Star claim the Blues boss is keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old forward, having worked with the Frenchman for three years during his own spell with Los Blancos.

However, the player is also on the radar of Arsenal, with agent Francois Gallardo claiming that Arsene Wenger is ‘obsessed’ with the player.

"Arsenal want to reinforce in the winter and will go for Benzema and Varane," he told Punto Pelota.

"Karim is the darling of Wenger, who is obsessed with him and Raphael, but the deal will almost be unworkable.”

The Gunners are relatively light in attack, with Olivier Giroud the leading marksman at the Emirates Stadium and little else behind him.

Nicklas Bendtner is the second-choice forward at Arsenal, but Benzema would give them a different dimension entirely. The north London club were linked with a £27million move for the player earlier in the month.

Chelsea won’t want the player to join a Premier League rival, particularly when the title race appears to be closer than ever this season.

The Blues have significantly more options up-front this season however, with Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba all vying for first team opportunities at Stamford Bridge under manager Jose Mourinho.

None have made the position their own though, and Chelsea certainly have the funds to challenge in the market if owner Roman Abramovich decides to back his manager once again.
