Manchester United and Arsenal transfer target Ilkay Gundogan is set for fresh contract talks at Borussia Dortmund.

The Germany international has been heavily linked with a move away from the Westfalenstadion, with speculation claiming Real Madrid were closing in on a £25million deal for the player earlier in the month.

However, the 23-year-old – who is also being linked with both the Red Devils and Gunners – has not agreed a deal to move elsewhere, and Dortmund are hopeful they can keep the player in the Bundesliga.

"Of course, we are very interested in signing a new contract with Ilkay Gundogan," Michael Zorc told kicker-Sportmagazin.

"Due to the injury that Ilkay Gundogan is out with at the moment, talks regarding a new deal have stalled, but we are keen to soon resume negotiations on a new contract."

The news is a potential blow for the interested parties – particularly Manchester United after their summer of transfer failures.

David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at the Red Devils helm, but had to settle for Marouane Fellaini after failing to lure the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara to Old Trafford.

The Premier League champions have subsequently struggled this season, and Manchester United may now have to look elsewhere if he pens a new Dortmund deal.

Arsenal have enjoyed a much better start to the season, with Arsene Wenger’s side top of the table following the arrival of Mesut Ozil.

The Gunners may need to strengthen in the New Year to maintain their fine form at the top of the table, and Gundogan appeared to be one option for the north London outfit.

However, a move to the Emirates Stadium also looks unlikely, and Arsenal will need to set their transfer sights elsewhere.
