Sunday's keenly-anticipated NFL clash between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium saw two of the finest quarterbacks in American Football history pit their wits against one another.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are both heading towards the latter stages of their careers, but their rivalry has been one of the undoubted highlights of the NFL over recent years. As it was, the game certainly did not disappoint in entertainment value as Brady and the Patriots overturned a 24-point deficit to record a thrilling 34-31 victory.

In addition to just enjoying a thoroughly marvelous encounter between two playoff-bound teams, this particular game also got us thinking on a wider scale about sporting rivalry.

While rivalries between clubs, teams and franchises are often discussed, dissected and dwelt upon, there have also been a plethora of exciting and thoroughly riveting individual rivalries throughout the history of sport.

Such individual rivalries can often be borne out of a mutual dislike or indeed, as in the case of Brady and Manning, based around two stars at the very top of their fields.
