Manchester United transfer target Faouzi Ghoulam is looking likely to leave St Etienne in January - but Roma lead the race, according to reports in Italy.

Italian news organisation Sky Italia claims Roma coach Rudi Garcia is eager to bring in competition for current first-choice Federico Balzaretti.

And Ghoulam, who has been linked with United within the last month, may be set to leave his French club in the January transfer window.

French newspaper Le 10 Sport suggests Ghoulam will become a top target for many clubs as the winter window approaches after a stellar start to the season in Ligue 1.

He's become a key player for the French outfit, but Le 10 Sport claims he's edging towards an exit.

Manchester United have been linked with several left-backs since the close of the summer window, including Southampton's Luke Shaw, Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao and Everton's Leighton Baines.

Upon hearing of the links with United last month Ghoulam said it was "flattering" to be associated with a "big club" like Manchester United.

The Algerian international has scored once and provided two assists in ten appearances for St Etienne this season - and according to, he's been their best player.
