Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is of the opinion that Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is a better footballer than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo's popularity has increased in recent weeks, particularly after his stunning hat-trick against Sweden in Portugal's 2014 World Cup qualifying play-off second leg.

Messi, meanwhile, has been nursing a hamstring injury and is expected to be out of action until January.

Ronaldo's recent heroics have shortened his odds of winning the 2013 Ballon d'Or award ahead of Messi and Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery. He is currently in pole position to land the prestigious individual accolade.

However, Wilshere feels that Messi - who has won the last four Ballon d'Or awards - still has the edge over the former Manchester United star.

"Some people say Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world, but for me it is still Messi," the England international revealed in a YouTube Q & A session. "He is similar to (Mesut) Ozil in the way he makes it look so easy with the way he glides past players."

Argentina international Messi is widely regarded as the best player of his generation - although the extraordinary recent form of Ronaldo, who has scored 25 goals in 18 matches this season, has caused some to question their original opinions.

But not Wilshere, who remains convinced that Messi is the better player.
