Ashley Cole's future at Chelsea is in doubt after it emerged that Chelsea want to sign Fabio Coentrao, possibly on loan at first, according to the Daily Mail.

The England international has been suffering from a rib injury for two months and in recent games Cesar Azpilicueta, who's long-term suitability at Stamford Bridge has also been called into question of late, has been playing ahead of him for the senior squad.

Jose Mourinho knows Coentrao from his time at Real Madrid and is believed to be keen on bringing him to the Premier League ahead of rivals Manchester United and Tottenham.

It's thought that the move may only be a loan initially, with a view to a permanent deal if Coentrao can take to English football.

However the Portuguese star is not the only option for Mourinho, who isn't convinced with Ashley Cole's immediate replacement Ryan Bertrand, and a move for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw is never far from the headlines.

It seems as though Coentrao is the preferred option for now, and Cole may have to fight to salvage what's left of his career with the Blues.
