Hull earn shock win over Liverpool

Hull City moved seven points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a surprise 3-1 victory at home to Liverpool.

Jake Livermore gave the hosts the lead early on in the first-half before a superb Steven Gerrard free-kick levelled the scores shortly after.

The hosts weren't deterred though as Adam Meyler put Hull back in front with a good left-footed finish with 18 minutes to go.

The visitors misery was compounded by a comedy goal late on as Martin Skrtel diverted a sliced Tom Huddlestone shot beyond his own keeper to seal what was one of the shock results of the season so far.

In truth, it was no less than the home side deserved as they didn't allow Liverpool to impose their own style on the match, and they showed great courage and determination following Gerrard's equaliser.

The encounter started fairly evenly but Hull went ahead on 20 minutes in fortuitous fashion. Livermore exchanged passes with Meyler and his effort from distance took a wicked deflection to divert the ball past a despairing Simon Mignolet.

However, the lead lasted just seven minutes as captain Gerrard bent in a sweetly struck free-kick from just outside the area that left Allan McGregor in the Hull goal no chance.

Hull continued to keep a foothold on the contest after the restart as Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm, and they were made to pay as Hull retook the lead on 72 minutes.

Defender Kolo Toure had three attempts to clear and when he eventually did the ball fell kindly to Meyler who did the rest, steering a low shot into the corner of the net.

Liverpool couldn't find an answer though and a late own goal from Skrtel capped off what was a poor performance from Brendan Rogers side.
