Manchester United: Five transfer targets to save season

Manchester United need strengthening in January - that much was clear during the Red Devils' 1-0 defeat to Everton on Wednesday night.

But who could David Moyes bring to Old Trafford in January?

Here are five potential winter signings...

5. Pedro | Barcelona

Pedro isn't the player Manchester United need most, but the Barcelona forward would bring goals from the wide areas.

The 26-year-old is a willing runner who will score goals if he gets the service.

4. Marco Reus | Borussia Dortmund

Marco Reus is a class act who would bring a cutting edge to Manchester United's forward-line.

But Borussia Dortmund will be reluctant to sign the 24-year-old, who has scored 30 goals in 68 appearances since arriving at Signal Iduna Park.

3. Fabio Coentrao | Real Madrid

Manchester United came agonisingly close to signing Fabio Coentrao on a season-long loan deal. But David Moyes should return for the Real Madrid full-back in January.

The 25-year-old would be cheaper than Everton's Leighton Baines, but he's be just as effective on United's left-hand side.

2. Ander Herrera | Athletic Bilbao

If Manchester United can negotiate a reasonable fee with Athletic Bilbao - and not pay the midfielder's extortionate release clause - then Ander Herrera would be a shrewd buy.

The 24-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer - but United should return in January, because they desperately need a player of his calibre in the middle of the park.

1. Daniele De Rossi | AS Roma

The best (semi-realistic) signing Manchester United could make in the January would be Daniele De Rossi of AS Roma.

The Italy international would bring leadership, class and steel to the Red Devils' midfield.

United are crying out for the 30-year-old - but De Rossi would need some convincing to even consider leaving the Stadio Olimpico.
